Leadership Styles:

Overview

Give the same team to two managers and you may get very different results. One barks orders and expects them obeyed; another asks the team for ideas; a third leaves them to get on with it. These are leadership styles, and the right one depends on the situation.

This lesson explains the autocratic, democratic and laissez-faire styles, their strengths and weaknesses, and how to recommend the best style for a given set of circumstances. By the end you will be able to match a leader's approach to the task and the team.

Objectives

  1. Features of the main leadership styles, e.g. autocratic, democratic and laissez-faire
  2. Recommend and justify an appropriate leadership style in given circumstances

Lesson Note

The way a manager leads affects how motivated staff are, how fast decisions are made and how good those decisions are. No single style is always best, so examiners ask you to choose and justify a style for a situation. That judgement is where the marks are.
