Overview

Radioactivity calculations use time and activity, so you need to be comfortable converting between seconds, minutes and hours, and you need to understand the becquerel as the unit of radioactive decay rate.

This reference covers the five units for the radioactivity section of the Edexcel specification: becquerel, centimetre, hour, minute and second.

Lesson Note

Unlike most physics sections, radioactivity introduces a new unit - the becquerel - specifically for measuring how many nuclei decay each second. The section also uses centimetres (for penetration distances) and multiple time units because half-lives range from fractions of a second to billions of years, and both decay-rate calculations and penetrating-power experiments turn up in exam questions built entirely around these five units.
