Tissues And Specialised Cells

Overview

No single cell can beat like a heart, carry oxygen, or think. Those jobs need thousands of similar cells working together as a tissue, and organs such as the heart or brain are themselves built from several different tissues layered and combined for a shared purpose.

In this lesson you will learn how bone, muscle, blood, nervous tissue and epithelium each look under a light microscope and how their structure suits their job, then examine how the egg and sperm, the two most specialised cells in the human body, are each built for a single event: fertilisation.

Objectives

  1. Understand that cells are grouped into tissues and that tissues are organised into organs
  2. Describe the structure of bone, muscle (voluntary, involuntary and cardiac, as observed under a light microscope), blood, nervous tissue and epithelium (squamous and ciliated, with reference to cells lining the cheek and trachea)
  3. Describe the structure of cells specialised for reproduction, e.g. egg (ovum) and sperm and relate their structure to function

Lesson Note

A single specialised cell is rarely useful on its own. A tissue is a group of similar cells, working together to carry out a shared function. An organ is a structure made of two or more different tissues working together to perform a more complex job. The heart, for example, is an organ built from muscle tissue that contracts, nervous tissue that coordinates the contraction, and epithelial tissue lining its chambers.
