Number Sets And Notation

Overview

Every number you have ever used belongs to a family. The counting numbers, the whole numbers, the integers stretching out below zero, the fractions that fill the gaps, and the stranger numbers that no fraction can ever name: mathematics gives each family a name and a precise piece of notation. Knowing which family a number lives in tells you instantly how it will behave.

In this lesson you will sort numbers into natural numbers, integers, rational and irrational numbers, and you will meet prime, square and cube numbers along the way. You will also learn the clean set language that examiners expect, so you can describe a collection of numbers exactly rather than vaguely.

Objectives

  1. Use natural numbers, integers (positive, negative and zero), prime numbers, square and cube numbers, and rational and irrational numbers, with correct set language and notation.

Lesson Note

Classifying numbers is the first step toward reasoning about them. Once you know that an integer can be negative but a natural number cannot, or that an irrational number can never be written as a fraction, whole classes of problems become predictable. The set notation you learn here also runs quietly through the rest of the syllabus, from probability to inequalities.
