Commerce - 4CM1 PearsonEdexcel

Production

Overview

Every product you buy travels a long journey before it reaches your hands. Raw materials are extracted from the earth, transformed in factories, and finally delivered to shops or your doorstep through a web of commercial services. Understanding how production is organised, and how commerce connects each stage, is the foundation of the entire 4CM1 course.

In this lesson you will explore the three sectors of production, the four factors that make production possible, and the way specialisation and the division of labour increase efficiency while creating the need for trade. You will see how commerce bridges the gap between producer and consumer, and why no country can thrive without it.

Objectives

  1. Understand production as the manufacture of goods and the provision and delivery of services
  2. Understand the factors of production: land, labour, capital and enterprise
  3. Understand industrial sectors and commerce: chain of production (primary, secondary and tertiary sector), the relationship between businesses in each sector, and the relative importance of each sector within countries
  4. Understand the division of labour: specialisation, the division of labour, specialisation of individuals, firms, regions and countries, impact of the division of labour on firms and workers, specialisation and the need for commerce, the interdependence of countries

Lesson Note

Think about a smartphone. Rare earth metals are mined in one country, silicon chips are manufactured in another, and the finished handset is assembled in a third before being shipped to a retailer near you. At every step, someone organises transport, arranges insurance, processes payments, and stores the goods. Without these commercial services the raw materials would never become the device in your pocket. That chain of activity is what commerce is all about.
