Genetic Engineering And Cell Division

Overview

Every person with type 1 diabetes who injects insulin today relies on bacteria that have been given a human gene. Genetic engineering lets scientists move a single useful gene between completely different species, turning bacteria into miniature insulin factories and plants into sources of vaccine proteins.

In this lesson you will learn how a gene is cut out, inserted into a vector and used to reprogramme an organism, follow the four stages of mitosis that let a single fertilised egg become a fully grown human body, and weigh up the promise and the ethical difficulties of using stem cells in medicine.

Objectives

  1. Outline principles of genetic engineering, including the production of genetically modified bacteria to produce human insulin, and the production of genetically modified plants to produce vaccines and to improve health
  2. Understand that mitosis occurs during growth, repair, cloning and asexual reproduction
  3. Know the four main stages of mitosis: prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase, which results in the production of two genetically identical diploid daughter cells
  4. Know that there are different types of stem cells, including embryonic and adult stem cells that have the ability to develop into other body cells
  5. Describe the advantages, disadvantages and ethics in the research and use of embryonic and adult stem cells

Lesson Note

Because the genetic code is universal, a gene taken from a human cell can be read correctly by a bacterium, and a fertilised human egg can use mitosis to build every tissue in the body from one single starting cell. This lesson looks at two ways human biology makes use of that shared code: deliberately moving genes between organisms in genetic engineering, and the highly controlled process of cell division that builds and repairs the body.
