Differentiating Products And Quotients

Overview

You can differentiate simple powers, but real functions are often built by multiplying or dividing two expressions together. To differentiate these you need two new tools: the product rule and the quotient rule. They are the natural next step once basic differentiation is secure.

In this lesson you will learn the product rule \((uv)'=u'v+uv'\) and the quotient rule \(\left(\frac{u}{v}\right)'=\frac{u'v-uv'}{v^2}\), and apply them to worked examples. The key skill is identifying the two pieces, differentiating each, and assembling the result in the correct order, especially the subtraction in the quotient rule.

Objectives

  1. Differentiate products and quotients of functions.

Lesson Note

Rates of change in the real world rarely come from a single simple power. Quantities multiply (area as length times width that both change) and divide (speed as distance over time). The product and quotient rules let you find the rate of change of such combined functions, which is essential for the optimisation and rates-of-change problems ahead.
