Symmetry

Overview

Symmetry is one of the most visual ideas in mathematics. Butterflies, snowflakes and company logos all use symmetry to create balance, and recognising the type and degree of symmetry in a shape is a key geometry skill.

This topic covers two kinds of symmetry: line symmetry (reflective) and rotational symmetry. You will learn to identify both in common 2D shapes and apply this knowledge to exam questions.

Objectives

  1. Identify any lines of symmetry and the order of rotational symmetry of a given two-dimensional figure

Lesson Note

Fold a heart shape down the middle and the two halves match perfectly. Spin a recycling symbol 120 degrees and it looks the same. These are the two faces of symmetry, and being able to spot them quickly earns straightforward marks.
