Network Hardware

Overview

How does one device find another among the billions connected to the world? Every networked computer relies on a small set of hardware and addresses working together: a card that physically connects it, a permanent factory address, a network-assigned address, and a device that forwards data to exactly the right place.

In this lesson you will learn what a network interface card does, the structure and purpose of a MAC address, the two kinds of IP address (IPv4 and IPv6) and how they differ, and the central role of the router in directing data and connecting a local network to the internet.

Lesson Note

A network is created when two or more devices are connected. For that to work, each device needs hardware to join the network and addresses so data can be sent to the right place. Knowing exactly what a NIC, a MAC address, an IP address and a router each do, and how they differ, is core Hardware knowledge that is tested in almost every paper.
