Relate Function Domain To Graph And Context

Overview

The domain of a function is the set of inputs it is allowed to take, and where you read that domain depends on how the function is presented. On a graph the domain is the spread of x-values the curve covers; in a real situation it is the set of inputs that actually make sense, such as a length that cannot be negative.

In this lesson you will relate the domain of a function to its graph and to the context it describes. You will read a domain from a graph, recognize the mathematical restrictions that limit a domain, and decide which inputs are sensible in a real-world problem.

Objectives

  1. Relate the domain of a function to its graph and, where applicable, to the quantitative relationship it describes.

Lesson Note

A function without its domain is only half the story. Knowing which inputs are allowed keeps your answers meaningful: a negative time or a fractional number of people simply does not belong. Reading the domain from a graph or a context is a skill examiners test directly.
