Technical Knowledge And Understanding

Overview

The specification calls light the most important element in photography, and it means that literally. There is no photograph without it, the word itself means drawing with light, and every piece of equipment in the subject exists to measure light, admit a controlled quantity of it, record it, or convert that record into something you can look at. Understanding the apparatus is what turns a lucky frame into a repeatable result.

This is the technical companion to the formal elements topic. Where that one asks what the picture says, this one asks how the machine and the chemistry deliver it: the quality, direction and colour of light, metering and the stop as a unit of measurement, exposure and the histogram, studio lighting, the darkroom from emulsion to fixer and the paper grades and test strips that go with it, and image manipulation by both silver-based and digital means, through to output.

Objectives

  1. Develop knowledge and understanding of the uses of light as the most important element in photography
  2. Understand viewpoints, composition and depth of field
  3. Understand darkroom techniques involving the recognition of appropriate paper types, developing and printing, emulsions, exposures, tone and contrast
  4. Understand manipulation of the image, either silver-based technology or digital format, through electronic and mechanical means including lasers, computers, scanners and photocopiers

Lesson Note

The specification lists two sets of requirements for Photography. The first is about seeing: the formal elements, the camera's functions as creative choices, observational recording. The second, which is this topic, is about the technical understanding underneath: the uses of light, the control of exposure and depth of field as measurable quantities, darkroom process and paper, and manipulation of the image by electronic and mechanical means.
