Opportunity Cost

Overview

Every time you choose one thing, you quietly give up something else. A government that builds a new airport terminal cannot spend that same money on hospitals; a student who studies Economics gives up the other subject they could have taken. That hidden cost of the road not taken is one of the most powerful ideas in the whole subject.

In this lesson you will define opportunity cost precisely, see it at work for consumers, workers, firms and governments, and read it straight off a production possibility curve. By the end you will be able to spot the sacrifice behind any economic choice and explain why rational decision makers weigh it carefully.

Objectives

  1. definition of opportunity cost
  2. examples of opportunity cost in different contexts
  3. decisions made by consumers, workers, producers/firms and governments when allocating their resources

Lesson Note

Resources are scarce but wants are unlimited, so every decision maker in the economy is forced to choose. The moment you choose, you sacrifice the best alternative you turned down. Naming and measuring that sacrifice is what stops choices from being random and makes them rational. Examiners return to opportunity cost again and again because it links scarcity, choice and decision making into a single thread that runs through the entire course.
