Properties Of Metals

Overview

Metals share a recognisable set of properties: they conduct heat and electricity, can be hammered into shape and drawn into wires, and usually have high melting points. These shared traits, and the chemical reactions metals undergo, explain why metals are so useful and how reactive each one is.

In this lesson you will compare the physical properties of metals and non-metals, then study the general chemical reactions of metals with dilute acids, with cold water and steam, and with oxygen. Together these build a clear picture of how metals behave and why their reactivity differs.

Objectives

  1. [Core] Compare the general physical properties of metals and non-metals, including: (a) thermal conductivity (b) electrical conductivity (c) malleability and ductility (d) melting points and boiling points
  2. [Core] Describe the general chemical properties of metals, limited to their reactions with: (a) dilute acids (b) cold water and steam

Lesson Note

Metals are the materials of the modern world, from the steel in buildings to the copper in cables. Knowing their physical properties tells you what they are good for, and knowing their chemical reactions tells you how reactive they are, which decides how they are stored, used and extracted. These reactions are also the foundation of the reactivity series.
