Atomic Structure

Overview

Every substance you encounter, from the iron in a bridge to the oxygen in your lungs, is built from atoms. These particles are far too small to see, yet understanding their internal structure explains why elements behave the way they do and why the Periodic Table is arranged the way it is.

In this lesson you will learn what atoms and molecules are, explore the subatomic particles inside every atom, use atomic number and mass number to work out proton, neutron and electron counts, and calculate relative atomic mass from isotopic abundances.

Objectives

  1. know what is meant by the terms atom and molecule
  2. know the structure of an atom in terms of the positions, relative masses and relative charges of sub-atomic particles
  3. know what is meant by the terms atomic number, mass number, isotopes and relative atomic mass (Ar)
  4. be able to calculate the relative atomic mass of an element (Ar) from isotopic abundances

Lesson Note

Slice a piece of gold in half, then half again, and keep going. Eventually you reach a single gold atom, the smallest particle that is still gold. Go further and you break it into protons, neutrons and electrons, none of which behave like gold at all. The atom is where element identity lives, and its internal structure controls everything from bonding to reactivity.
