Communications

Overview

Commerce depends on the flow of information just as much as the flow of goods. A manufacturer needs to place orders with suppliers, a retailer needs to confirm delivery dates, and a bank needs to authorise payments, all within hours rather than weeks. The method chosen for each message can determine whether a deal goes through on time or falls apart.

In this lesson you will explore why effective communication matters in commerce, compare oral, written and electronic methods, and learn how to choose the right channel for each commercial situation. You will also examine how modern technology has transformed the speed, reach and cost of business communication.

Objectives

  1. Understand the importance of effective communication in commerce and appropriate methods in commercial contexts
  2. Understand types of communication: oral, written and electronic
  3. Understand methods of oral communication: telephone, meeting, face-to-face
  4. Understand methods of written communication: letter, agenda, minutes
  5. Understand methods of electronic communication: internet, teleconferencing, videoconferencing, email

Lesson Note

A wholesaler in Lagos confirms a bulk order by email at 9 a.m., a freight company in Rotterdam updates the shipment tracker by noon, and a retailer in London schedules a video call with the supplier before close of business. None of these transactions involves a single sheet of paper, yet each one would have required letters, telegrams or telephone calls just a generation ago. Communication is the nervous system of commerce: it carries instructions, confirmations, complaints and payments between every link in the chain of distribution.
