States Of Matter

Overview

Everything around you - the air you breathe, the water you drink, and the ground beneath your feet - exists as a solid, a liquid, or a gas. The difference between these three states is not what the particles are, but how they are arranged and how much energy they have.

In this lesson you will learn how particle arrangement, movement, and energy differ in solids, liquids, and gases. You will also explore the changes of state that convert one form into another and explain each one using the particle model.

Objectives

  1. Understand the three states of matter in terms of the arrangement, movement and energy of the particles
  2. Understand the interconversions between the three states of matter in terms of the names, how they are achieved, and the changes in arrangement, movement and energy of the particles
  3. Understand how the results of experiments involving the dilution of coloured solutions and diffusion of gases can be explained

Lesson Note

Iron, water, and oxygen look completely different, yet the particle model explains all three. The same substance can exist as a solid, a liquid, or a gas depending on its temperature and pressure. What changes is the arrangement, movement, and energy of the particles - not the particles themselves.
