The Meaning Of Production:

Overview

Production is where a business actually creates the value it sells: raw materials, labour, machines and ideas go in, and finished goods and services come out. How well a firm manages that transformation decides whether it makes a healthy profit or quietly bleeds money on waste.

In this lesson you will learn the difference between production and productivity, how to raise efficiency, why firms hold inventories, and the powerful idea of lean production with its tools of just-in-time and Kaizen. You will be able to calculate productivity and judge how a firm could produce more from the same resources.

Objectives

  1. Managing resources effectively to produce goods and services
  2. Difference between production and productivity
  3. Benefits of increasing efficiency and how to increase it, e.g. increasing productivity by automation and technology, improved labour skills
  4. Why businesses hold inventories
  5. The concept of lean production: how to achieve it, e.g. just-in-time inventory control and Kaizen; benefits of lean production

Lesson Note

Producing more from the same resources lowers the cost of each unit, which lets a firm cut prices, raise profit, or both. Examiners test whether you can tell production from productivity, calculate productivity, and explain modern methods such as just-in-time and Kaizen. These are precise, well-rewarded marks.
