Overview
Most writing is about something. These two forms are aimed at somebody. A speech has people in a room who cannot pause you and cannot go back; a letter has one named reader, alone, who can reread every line and who is going to do something afterwards. Everything that makes these forms difficult, and everything that makes them score, comes from that single fact.
This note treats them as two solutions to the same problem: how do you write to a person you can picture? You will learn how to build a speech for the ear rather than the eye, why the most effective angry letter is the calmest one in the postbag, and how to end each form with something the recipient can actually act on.
