The Importance Of A Well-motivated Workforce:

Overview

Two workers can do the same job for the same pay, yet one produces twice as much and never misses a day, while the other does the minimum and often calls in sick. The difference is motivation, and managing it is one of the most valuable skills in business.

This lesson explains why people work, what a well-motivated workforce gives a business, and the famous theories of Maslow, Taylor and Herzberg that explain how to motivate people. By the end you will be able to link human needs to the way a real business treats its staff.

Objectives

  1. Why people work and what motivation means
  2. The benefits of a well-motivated workforce: labour productivity, reduced absenteeism and labour turnover
  3. The concept of human needs, e.g. Maslow’s hierarchy
  4. Key motivational theories: Taylor and Herzberg

Lesson Note

Motivated workers are more productive, take fewer days off and stay longer, which cuts the cost of recruiting and training replacements. A business that understands motivation can get more output from the same staff. Examiners expect you to use a theory, not just say 'pay more', so the reasoning here earns marks.
