Finishing

Overview

A printed sheet that comes off the press is rarely the finished product. The glossy shine on a paperback cover, the raised silvery logo on a luxury gift box, the wipe-clean coating on a restaurant menu and the matt velvet feel of a premium business card are all the result of finishing: the processes applied after printing to protect a graphic product or to make it look and feel more valuable.

This note covers the two jobs that finishes do - decoration and protection - and the idea of self-finishing materials that need no extra treatment at all. You will learn how laminating, varnishing, foil blocking, embossing and UV coating work, when to choose a decorative finish over a protective one (and when a single finish does both), and why some materials, such as acrylic and many plastics, arrive already finished.

Objectives

  1. select and use appropriate finishes including: - decorative finishes - protective finishes
  2. show an understanding of self-finishing materials.

Lesson Note

Finishing is everything done to a graphic product after the ink is printed. Finishes do one or both of two jobs. A protective finish defends the product against wear, moisture, grease, fading and handling so it lasts longer and stays usable. A decorative finish makes the product look and feel more attractive or more expensive, adding shine, texture, colour or a sense of quality. Many finishes do both at once: a gloss laminate on a menu both protects it from food splashes and makes the colours look richer.
