Gas Exchange

Overview

Your body needs a constant supply of oxygen for aerobic respiration and must get rid of the carbon dioxide it produces. The breathing system is built to make this exchange as fast and efficient as possible, from the ribcage muscles that ventilate the lungs to the microscopic alveoli where gases cross into the blood.

In this lesson you will learn the structure of the thorax, how ventilation works, why alveoli are so well suited to gas exchange, the biological damage caused by smoking, and a practical investigation into the effect of exercise on breathing rate.

Objectives

  1. Describe the structure of the thorax, including the ribs, intercostal muscles, diaphragm, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli and pleural membranes
  2. Understand the role of the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm in ventilation
  3. Explain how alveoli are adapted for gas exchange by diffusion between air in the lungs and blood in capillaries
  4. Understand the biological consequences of smoking in relation to the lungs and the circulatory system, including coronary heart disease
  5. Investigate breathing in humans, including the release of carbon dioxide and the effect of exercise

Lesson Note

You breathe roughly 20,000 times a day without thinking about it. Each breath draws oxygen to the surfaces where it crosses into the blood and removes carbon dioxide produced by respiring cells. The structures of the thorax are precisely arranged to make this exchange rapid and continuous, and the consequences of damaging them through smoking can be severe.
