Cell Structure

Overview

Every living organism, from a bacterium in the soil to a blue whale crossing the ocean, is built from cells. These tiny units carry out all the chemical reactions that keep life going, and each one contains a precise arrangement of structures that make those reactions possible.

In this lesson you will learn the key structures found inside animal and plant cells, what each one does, and how to spot the differences between the two cell types. These foundations come up in almost every biology topic that follows, so getting them right now pays off across the whole course.

Objectives

  1. Describe cell structures, including the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, mitochondria, chloroplasts, ribosomes and vacuole
  2. Describe the functions of the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, mitochondria, chloroplasts, ribosomes and vacuole
  3. Know the similarities and differences in the structure of plant and animal cells

Lesson Note

Pick up any living tissue, zoom in far enough, and you reach the cell. Robert Hooke first described cells in 1665 when he looked at thin slices of cork under an early microscope. Today we know that cells are the smallest unit of life: they take in nutrients, release energy, grow, and reproduce. Understanding what sits inside a cell is the first step toward understanding how organisms function.
