Overview

Every second, the heart pushes blood through a closed network of vessels that reaches almost every cell in the body, carrying oxygen, nutrients, hormones, waste and the immune system's front line all at once, in the same fluid. This topic takes blood apart component by component, follows it through the exact chambers and vessels of the heart, and compares the three vessel types built to do very different jobs along the way.

You need precise structure-to-function reasoning here: why an artery is built the way it is, which vessel connects to which heart chamber, why the left ventricle is thicker than the right, and how ABO blood groups make transfusion a matter of matching antigens rather than simply topping up volume.

Objectives

  1. Know the composition of the blood: red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (phagocytes and lymphocytes), platelets and plasma

  4. Explain how red blood cells are adapted for oxygen transport
  5. Understand the role of ABO blood groups and their importance in blood transfusions
  6. Understand the role of white blood cells including phagocytosis and antibody production
  7. Describe the importance of blood clotting and the role of enzymes in causing the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin
  8. Compare the structures of arteries, veins and capillaries, and understand their roles including the pulse
  9. Know the general plan of the circulatory system to include the blood vessels to and from the heart, the lungs, the liver and the kidneys
  10. Know the structure of the heart and how it functions

Lesson Note

Blood is a tissue: a fluid, plasma, carrying several distinct types of cell and cell fragment, each doing a different job. Together they transport substances, defend against infection and seal wounds, and every one of these functions depends on a circulatory system built to move blood efficiently in one direction around the body.
