Ratio And Proportion

Overview

Ratio is how we compare quantities and share things out fairly, from mixing concrete to splitting a bill. Proportion is the partner idea: when two quantities change together at a fixed rate. Together they turn everyday sharing and scaling problems into quick, reliable calculations.

In this lesson you will write ratios in their simplest form, divide a quantity in a given ratio, and use proportional reasoning to scale recipes, maps and prices up or down. These methods reappear in similarity, rates and percentages, so they are well worth securing.

Objectives

  1. Understand and use ratio and proportion to: give ratios in their simplest form divide a quantity in a given ratio use proportional reasoning and ratios in context.

Lesson Note

Sharing in a ratio and scaling in proportion are everywhere money or materials are divided or recipes are resized. The unitary method you learn here is one of the most transferable tools in the course.
