Fieldwork Investigations

Overview

Good environmental decisions rest on good data, and good data comes from careful fieldwork. You cannot count every plant in a meadow or interview every person in a city, so scientists take a sample and use it to draw reliable conclusions about the whole. Done well, fieldwork turns a vague hunch into evidence; done badly, it produces numbers that mislead everyone who trusts them.

In this lesson you will learn how to apply the scientific method to collect reliable data: writing aims and hypotheses, choosing variables, and using repeats. You will compare random and systematic sampling, learn the field techniques used to measure populations, from quadrats and transects to pitfall traps and pooters, and see how to record, analyse and conclude from your results, weighing up the limits of each method.

Lesson Note

Fieldwork skills are tested directly in the exam, often through data-response questions that ask you to suggest a hypothesis, choose a sampling method, read a results table or judge the reliability of an investigation.
