Synthetic Polymers

Overview

Plastics are everywhere - packaging, clothing, electronics, medical equipment. Almost all of them are synthetic polymers, giant molecules built by joining thousands of small monomer molecules together.

In this lesson you will learn what monomers and polymers are, how addition polymerisation works, how to draw repeat units from monomers and vice versa, and the environmental problems that come from disposing of these incredibly durable materials.

Objectives

  1. Know that an addition polymer is formed by joining up many small molecules called monomers
  2. Understand how to draw the repeat unit of an addition polymer
  3. Understand how to deduce the structure of a monomer from the repeat unit of an addition polymer and vice versa
  4. Explain problems in the disposal of addition polymers, including their inertness and the production of toxic gases when burned

Lesson Note

A plastic bag, a drinks bottle, a smartphone case - each is made from a polymer. The word polymer means 'many parts', and that is exactly what these molecules are: long chains built from thousands of identical small molecules called monomers.
