Computers In Medicine
Overview
A doctor in an emergency pulls up a patient's blood group, allergies and current medication in seconds; a surgeon rehearses an operation on a plastic copy of a real skull printed from a scan; a pharmacy prints a tablet shaped to release its medicine at exactly the right rate for one person. Medicine is being transformed by two ICT ideas you can describe: information systems that store patient records, and 3D printers that build physical objects layer by layer.
This lesson explains what data a patient record holds and why sharing it safely matters, then explores the striking medical uses of 3D printing: prosthetics, surgical aids, tissue engineering, artificial blood vessels and customised medicines. You will be able to describe each use, explain how it helps patients, and discuss the benefits and concerns the way an examiner expects.
