Experimental Imagery
Overview
Photography does not require a camera. It requires something sensitive to light and some light, and every arrangement of those two things is a photographic process waiting to be tried. A leaf on a sheet of paper in sunlight is a photograph. So is a strip of film left in a puddle, a scanner lid left open, a print developed with a brush instead of a tray.
This note is about deliberately leaving the standard route. It covers camera-less processes such as photograms and cyanotype, chemical and physical intervention in the darkroom, multiple exposure and long exposure as ways of collapsing time, the flatbed scanner as a camera, digital layering and glitch, and the discipline that stops all of this being a mess: testing one variable at a time and recording what you did.
