Variety Of Living Organisms
Overview
Life on Earth ranges from microscopic bacteria that thrive in boiling hot springs to giant redwood trees that stand for thousands of years. Biologists organise this staggering diversity into groups based on shared features, splitting organisms into eukaryotes and prokaryotes and then asking which ones cause disease.
In this lesson you will compare the four eukaryotic kingdoms (animals, plants, fungi and protoctists), explore how prokaryotic bacteria differ from them, and learn what makes an organism a pathogen. These distinctions appear throughout the biology section of the Double Award and form the foundation for topics on cells, disease and ecology.
