Types Of Digital Communications
Overview
Every text message, video call and file download depends on digital devices being able to talk to each other. Whether the signal travels through a copper cable, bounces off a satellite or hops across a wireless network, understanding the different communication methods is essential for choosing the right one in any given situation.
In this lesson you will explore device-to-device connections, compare network types such as LANs and WANs, and examine the full range of wired and wireless technologies that keep our digital world connected. You will also learn how to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each approach, a skill tested regularly on both Edexcel papers.
Objectives
- Know the range of ways that digital devices communicate: satellite, broadcast (TV, radio), wired (cable), wireless
- Know that digital devices can communicate device to device and by using networks: local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), personal area network (PAN), tethering
- Know the types of wireless communication: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3G, 4G, infra-red (IR), near-field communication (NFC)
- Know the differences between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and when each is best used
