To What Extent Was It A World War?

Overview

It is easy to picture the First World War as a line of trenches in France and Belgium. Yet men from every inhabited continent fought in it, campaigns were waged in Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific, and the navies of several nations clashed across the oceans. Soldiers from India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean and Africa served far from home, while Japan and the Arab forces of the revolt opened fronts of their own. How far does all this make 1914 to 1918 a truly world war?

This lesson examines the global reach of the conflict through four questions the syllabus highlights: the role of British Empire troops on the Western Front, the contribution of Indian and South African forces in Africa, the part played by Japan, and the importance of the Arab Revolt. You will learn not only what each contributed but how to weigh those contributions, so you can argue, with evidence, just how far the war deserves to be called a world war.

Objectives

  1. How important was the role of troops from the British Empire on the Western Front?
  2. What was the contribution of Indian and South African troops in Africa?
  3. What was the contribution of Japan to the Allied victory?
  4. How important was the Arab Revolt?

Lesson Note

The label world war is not just a description; in the exam it is a claim to be tested. Cambridge questions on this topic ask how important a particular contribution was, which means you must both show the global spread of the fighting and judge how much each part actually mattered to the outcome. Learning the contributions of empire, African, Japanese and Arab forces lets you build a balanced argument rather than simply listing the places where battles happened.
