Emerging Technologies

Overview

Some technologies do not just give us new gadgets; they change how we live and work. Artificial intelligence already drives our cars, recommends our films and answers our questions, while extended reality lets us try on clothes that do not exist and walk through buildings that have not been built. These are emerging technologies, and weighing their benefits against their risks is one of the most important skills an ICT course can teach.

In this lesson you will learn what artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) are, how augmented reality and virtual reality differ, and how each affects everyday life. You will practise giving balanced arguments, both the positive and the negative impacts, because that balance is exactly what examiners look for in this topic.

Objectives

  1. Impact of emerging technologies.
  2. Impact on everyday life including Artificial Intelligence (AI), extended reality (virtual and augmented).

Lesson Note

This topic is examined through discussion, not recall. You are asked to describe a technology and then judge its impact, giving both advantages and drawbacks. The marks reward a balanced answer with clear, specific examples. It is also the most fast-moving part of the syllabus, so being able to reason about a new technology, rather than just memorise one, is a skill that will outlast any single device.
