Every modern prose text on this course runs on two clocks. One is the year the story happens in: Umuofia in the 1890s, Maycomb in the middle of the Depression, a near future that is never dated. The other is the year the writer sat down to tell it, from a particular town, a particular family and a particular set of reasons for wanting the story told at all. Contextual reading is what happens when you hold both clocks at once.
This note covers the two contextual factors that sit closest to the text itself: the writer's own life and individual situation, and the historical setting, time and location of the work. It also teaches the discipline that makes contextual knowledge worth marks. Context is credited when it changes an interpretation, and ignored when it is simply recited.
