Density And Pressure

Overview

Density tells you how much mass is packed into a given volume, while pressure describes how a force is spread over an area. Together, these two ideas explain everything from why steel sinks and cork floats to why deep-sea divers need reinforced suits.

In this lesson you will learn the equations for density and pressure, how to measure density for regular and irregular objects, how pressure acts in fluids, and how to calculate pressure differences in columns of liquid.

Objectives

  1. Know and use the relationship between density, mass and volume
  2. Investigate density using direct measurements of mass and volume
  3. Know and use the relationship between pressure, force and area
  4. Understand how the pressure at a point in a gas or liquid at rest acts equally in all directions
  5. Know and use the relationship for pressure difference

Lesson Note

Pick up an iron bolt and a piece of polystyrene the same size. The iron feels far heavier because more mass is squeezed into the same volume. That is the idea behind density, and it underpins every 'will it float?' question you will ever meet.
