Every maize cob and every pod of beans began as a flower. Plants make the next generation in two very different ways. In sexual reproduction a flower brings male and female cells together to make seeds, mixing the qualities of two parents. In asexual reproduction a single plant grows a whole new plant from a piece of itself, a tuber or a cutting, with no seeds and no mixing at all. A farmer uses both: seeds to grow a maize field, cuttings to multiply a prized cassava.
In this lesson you will compare the wind-pollinated flower of maize with the insect-pollinated flower of a bean, follow pollen to the egg in fertilisation, and see how seeds and fruits are spread so that new plants are not crowded together. You will also learn why scattered weed seeds are so hard to control, and how planting tubers and cuttings lets a farmer copy a good plant exactly.
