Graphs And Coordinate Geometry

Overview

Every equation in x and y has a shape hiding inside it. Coordinate geometry is the bridge between the algebra and the picture: read an equation correctly and you can predict whether its graph is a straight line, a curving parabola, a cubic wave or a two-branched reciprocal curve before a single point is plotted.

This topic covers plotting Cartesian coordinates, reading gradient and intercept straight from y = mx + c, sketching polynomial and reciprocal graphs from a table of values, using where two graphs cross to solve equations, and estimating the gradient of a curve using a tangent.

Objectives

  1. Use rectangular Cartesian coordinates
  2. Recognise that equations of the form y = mx + c are straight-line graphs with gradient m and intercept on the y-axis at (0, c)
  3. Draw and interpret graphs of polynomial and reciprocal functions
  4. Use the intersection of two curves (graphs) to solve equations
  5. Determine the gradients of graphs by drawing tangents

Lesson Note

Rectangular Cartesian coordinates locate a point using two perpendicular number lines: the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y-axis, crossing at the origin \((0, 0)\). Every point in the plane is described by a unique ordered pair \((x, y)\), where x is the horizontal distance from the origin and y is the vertical distance. The two axes divide the plane into four quadrants, and the sign of the coordinates tells you which quadrant a point lies in without needing to plot it: positive x and positive y sit in the first quadrant, negative x and positive y in the second, and so on round the plane.
