Alkenes

Overview

Alkenes are the reactive cousins of alkanes. Their defining feature - a carbon-carbon double bond - makes them unsaturated and opens the door to addition reactions that alkanes simply cannot undergo.

In this lesson you will learn the general formula for alkenes, how to draw their structural and displayed formulae for up to four carbon atoms, why the C=C functional group makes them unsaturated, and how to use bromine water as a simple test to tell alkenes and alkanes apart.

Lesson Note

Swap one single bond for a double bond and the entire chemistry changes. Alkenes are far more reactive than alkanes, which is why they serve as the starting point for making polymers, alcohols and a huge range of industrial chemicals.
