Methods Of Payment

Overview

Every commercial transaction ends the same way: the buyer pays the seller. How that payment happens, though, varies enormously. A market trader might take cash from a customer's hand, while a multinational importer settles a six-figure invoice through a letter of credit that neither party's bank releases until the goods clear customs.

In this lesson you will explore the full range of payment methods used in domestic and international commerce, from traditional cash and cheques to debit cards, bank transfers, mobile wallets and trade finance instruments. You will learn the advantages and drawbacks of each method for both buyers and sellers, and practise choosing the right one for different commercial situations.

Objectives

  1. Understand methods of payment: cheques, standing orders, bank giro (credit transfer), direct debits, bank drafts, debit cards, credit cards, electronic transfers, postal orders, cash on delivery, documentary credits, money transfer

Lesson Note

When a street vendor sells a bag of fruit, the customer hands over coins and walks away. When a car manufacturer buys steel from an overseas supplier, a chain of banks, documents and electronic transfers keeps the money moving safely across borders. The underlying principle is the same: value must move from buyer to seller. The method chosen depends on cost, speed, security, convenience and the trust between the parties.
