Length And Midpoint

Overview

Once two points are fixed on a grid, two natural questions follow: how far apart are they, and what is the point exactly halfway between them? The length and midpoint formulas answer both, and the length formula is really Pythagoras' theorem in disguise.

In this lesson (Extended tier) you will calculate the length of a line segment and find the coordinates of its midpoint, given the coordinates of its endpoints.

Objectives

  1. Calculate the length of a line segment.
  2. Find the coordinates of the midpoint of a line segment.

Lesson Note

Distance and midpoint are core coordinate-geometry tools, used in geometry proofs, in finding centres, and anywhere you need the straight-line distance between two positions.
