The Main Landforms Associated With These Processes

Overview

A coastline is a record of a long argument between the sea and the rock. Where the rock is weak the sea wins, carving bays, caves, arches and stacks. Where waves run out of energy they put material down, building beaches, spits, bars and dunes. The shape of the land, hard headland or soft bay, sand spit or chalk stack, tells you which side is winning and why.

This lesson works through the coast's two families of landform: the features of erosion (headlands and bays, cliffs, wave-cut platforms, caves, arches, stacks and stumps) and the features of deposition (beaches, spits, bars and sand dunes). You will also learn how the layout of hard and soft rock creates discordant and concordant coastlines.

Objectives

  1. The characteristics and formation of landforms: headlands, bays, cliffs, wave-cut platforms, caves, arches, stacks, stumps, beaches, spits, bars, sand dunes.
  2. The formation and characteristics of discordant and concordant coastlines.

Lesson Note

As with rivers, coastal questions test whether you can link process to landform. The crowd-pleaser is the cave to arch to stack to stump sequence, but examiners also ask about cliffs, wave-cut platforms, spits and dunes, and about why some coasts have bays and headlands while others run straight. Learn one clear formation sequence per landform and support it with a labelled diagram.
