Development And Testing

Overview

A new system might look finished, but until it has been tested thoroughly nobody knows whether it really works. Development and testing is the stage where the system is built up, piece by piece, and deliberately attacked with carefully chosen data to expose every fault before real customers ever touch it. The goal is simple: find the bugs now, while they are cheap to fix, not after the system goes live.

In this lesson you will learn why a system must be tested before implementation, how testing is planned with a test plan, and how software is tested module by module and then as a whole. Above all you will master the three kinds of test data, normal, abnormal and extreme, and learn what live data is and why it is used as the final check.

Objectives

  1. Testing.
  2. The need to test the system before implementation Test designs, test strategies, test plan (test data, expected outcomes, actual outcomes, remedial action) following testing Test designs including the testing of data structures, file structures, input formats, output formats and validation routines Test strategies including to test each module, each function and the whole system The definition, characteristics and use of test data using normal, abnormal and extreme data The use of live data.

Lesson Note

Software that has not been tested properly will fail in use, and a failure that reaches a real customer is far more damaging and expensive than one caught in development. Testing is how a team gains confidence that the system does what the requirements demanded. It is not a single act but a planned, repeated process: design the tests, run them, fix what breaks and test again, until the system handles every kind of data it could meet without crashing or giving wrong results.
