Level Of Organisation

Overview

Your body contains around 37 trillion cells, but those cells are not all the same. They are organised into layers of increasing complexity, from tiny structures inside a cell right up to complete organ systems that keep you alive.

In this lesson you will learn the five levels of organisation in living organisms: organelles, cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Understanding this hierarchy is essential for explaining how structure relates to function throughout biology.

Objectives

  1. Describe the levels of organisation in organisms: organelles, cells, tissues, organs and systems

Lesson Note

A factory floor has machines, each machine has components, and each component has individual parts. Living organisms work the same way. A single heart cell is useless on its own, but group millions of them into cardiac muscle tissue, combine that tissue with valve tissue and connective tissue to form the heart organ, and connect that organ to blood vessels and the lungs - and you have a circulatory system capable of pumping blood around an entire body. This layered arrangement is called the levels of organisation.
