Storage Devices And Media
Overview
Switch a computer off and everything in its main memory vanishes. So how do your photos, documents, apps and the operating system itself survive? They live in secondary storage: the hard drive, the SSD, the memory card, the DVD. These devices hold data permanently, long after the power is gone, and they come in three great families, magnetic, optical and solid-state, each with its own way of holding the ones and zeros.
In this lesson you will learn the crucial difference between a storage device and the storage medium it reads, then explore the three technologies in turn: magnetic drives and tape, optical CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray, and solid-state SSDs, pen drives and memory cards. You will learn how each stores data, what it is best used for, and how to weigh capacity, speed, cost and portability so you can pick the right storage for any task.
