Plant Tissues, Organs And Systems

Overview

A leaf is a few tenths of a millimetre thick and has to do three incompatible things at once: catch as much light as possible, let carbon dioxide in, and avoid drying out in the sun that provides the light. The way it is layered is the compromise, and every layer is there for a reason you can work out.

In this lesson you will name the plant tissues the specification asks for, slice through a leaf and account for each layer, and learn where xylem and phloem sit in a root and in a stem. That last detail is small, easily forgotten and reliably examined.

Objectives

  1. Examples of plant tissues include: epidermal tissues, which cover the plant; palisade mesophyll, which carries out photosynthesis; spongy mesophyll, which has air spaces to facilitate diffusion of gases; xylem and phloem, which transport substances around the plant.
  2. Plant organs include stems, roots and leaves. Details of the internal structure of these organs are limited to the leaf and to the position of the xylem and phloem in a dicotyledonous primary root and primary stem.
