Length And Midpoint

Overview

Once two points are fixed on a grid, you can find both how far apart they are and the point exactly halfway between them. The length formula is Pythagoras' theorem in coordinate form, and the midpoint is just the average of the coordinates.

In this lesson you will calculate the length of a line segment and find the midpoint, given the coordinates of its end points.

Objectives

  1. Calculate the length of a line segment from the coordinates of its end points.
  2. Find the coordinates of the midpoint of a line segment from the coordinates of its end points.
  3. Calculate the length of a line segment. (Extended only)
  4. Find the coordinates of the midpoint of a line segment. (Extended only)

Lesson Note

Distance and midpoint are core coordinate-geometry tools used in geometry, graphics and navigation whenever you need a straight-line distance or a centre point.
