Communication

Overview

Designing a graphic product is only half the job. The other half is getting the idea out of your head and into the heads of clients, printers and the rest of the design team without the message getting lost on the way. This topic looks at how graphic designers share proposals using text messages, emails and social media, how teams work together with collaborative and remote-working tools, and which digital tools and software a designer actually reaches for at the desk.

For the Graphic products option you are expected to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of each channel rather than just list them. Knowing why an email beats a text for a formal sign-off, or why a shared cloud file is safer than a chain of attachments, is exactly the kind of reasoned judgement the examiner is looking for. This note builds that judgement step by step.

Objectives

  1. understand the advantages and disadvantages of using text, emails and social media platforms in communicating design proposals
  2. understand the advantages and disadvantages of using collaborative and remote working software in communicating design proposals
  3. show knowledge of the use of digital tools and software in graphic design.

Lesson Note

A graphic product such as a logo, a packaging net, a poster or an app interface passes through many hands before it reaches the public. The designer must explain the idea to a client who is paying for it, agree changes with colleagues, and hand precise files to a printer or manufacturer. If any of those conversations is unclear, the finished product can be wrong even when the design itself was good. Choosing the right communication channel for each step is therefore a genuine design decision, not an afterthought.
