Elements, Compounds And Mixtures

Overview

Look around you and almost everything is a mixture: the air you breathe, the sea water at the coast, even the steel in a bridge. Pure substances are actually quite rare in the everyday world. To make sense of matter, chemists sort it into three kinds, elements, compounds and mixtures, and each behaves in its own distinct way.

In this lesson you will learn exactly what separates an element from a compound, and a compound from a mixture. The key ideas are simple but powerful: an element has just one kind of atom, a compound joins atoms chemically in fixed proportions, and a mixture is just substances put together without any chemical bond.
