Properties Of Waves

Overview

Drop a stone into a still pond and something travels outwards across the surface, yet the water itself stays where it was. That is the strange and powerful idea at the heart of this topic: a wave moves energy and information from place to place without carrying any material with it.

In this lesson you will learn the vocabulary that describes every wave, from a ripple in a tank to a radio signal from a satellite, master the wave equation that links speed, frequency and wavelength, and see why every wave, without exception, can be reflected and refracted.

Objectives

  1. Know the definitions of amplitude, wavefront, frequency, wavelength and period of a wave
  2. Know that waves transfer energy and information without transferring matter
  3. Know and use the relationship between the speed, frequency and wavelength of a wave: v = f x lambda
  4. Use the above relationships in different contexts including sound waves and electromagnetic waves
  5. Explain that all waves can be reflected and refracted

Lesson Note

A seagull sitting on the sea bobs up and down as waves roll beneath it, but it does not get carried to the shore. A shout reaches your friend across a field, yet no air travels from your mouth to their ear. Sunlight crosses 150 million kilometres of empty space to warm your face. In every one of these cases something has clearly been transferred, and equally clearly it was not matter. That something is energy, and the mechanism is a wave.
