Production Possibility Curve (PPC) Diagrams

Overview

Every economy, from the smallest island to the largest superpower, faces the same hard truth: resources are limited but wants are not. The production possibility curve turns that idea into a single, powerful picture. It shows the most an economy can make when it uses every factor of production fully and well, and it shows the painful trade-off whenever you want more of one thing.

In this lesson you will draw and read the PPC, place production points on it, under it and beyond it, and explain exactly what each location means. You will see opportunity cost as a movement along the curve, and economic growth as the whole curve shifting outwards. By the end you will be able to use one diagram to analyse scarcity, choice and growth the way an examiner expects.

Objectives

  1. definition
  2. drawing and interpretation of the PPC diagram
  3. the significance of the location of different production points
  4. the significance of movements along a PPC and opportunity cost
  5. causes and consequences of shifts of a PPC in terms of an economy’s growth

Lesson Note

Scarcity forces every economy to choose. The PPC is the diagram that captures that choice on a single pair of axes, so it appears again and again across the whole course: in opportunity cost, in economic growth, and in how markets allocate resources. Master it here and many later topics become a matter of shifting or moving along one curve.
