Requirements For Connecting To A Network, Including The Internet

Overview

Before a single web page can load or an email can arrive, a chain of hardware and software must be in place. From the cables that carry data to the servers that store it, every network relies on components working together so that devices can find each other, share resources, and reach the wider internet.

In this lesson you will learn how devices are identified on a network using IP addresses, MAC addresses, and device names. You will explore the hardware that connects wired and wireless systems, and understand the role of ISPs, web browsers, search engines, and filter software in getting you online safely.

Objectives

  1. Know about network operating systems and how devices are identified on a network: device name, internet protocol (IP) and Media Access Control (MAC)
  2. Understand the function of components of wired and wireless systems: cable, wireless access point, router, gateway, booster, server
  3. Know the role of web browser, ISP, search engine and filter software for connecting to and using the internet

Lesson Note

Every time you type a web address or send a message, dozens of components spring into action. Routers choose the fastest path for your data, switches direct traffic to the right port, and servers deliver the files you asked for. Understanding what each piece does is the first step to designing, troubleshooting, or securing any network.
